MAXXIS High Roller 3
Key facts:
- Tubeless-Ready
- Front or Rear Tyre
- For Downhill or Enduro
- For medium, loose & loose over hard conditions
- Optimised for wide rims with Maxxis WT
- Range fitment? Between the Assegai and Shorty
Available in 3CMaxxGrip only, the latest tubeless-ready High Roller returns with an all new hybrid tread designed for intermediate enduro or downhill conditions.
Developed with extensive input and testing from their World Cup athletes, the third generation of the High Roller is built to take on mixed conditions at high speeds. The center tread uses a mid-spike design similar to the Shorty but with a lower knob height. These knobs provide excellent soil penetration in soft, loose, or dusty conditions while remaining stable enough to prevent squirm on hard surfaces. Cornering traction is enhanced via large, well-supported side knobs for predictable handling.
The third gen High Roller slots into the Maxxis gravity range between the Assegai and the Shorty. The widely-spaced tread of the High Roller clears debris better than the Assegai and it performs better in drier conditions compared to the Shorty. These attributes make the High Roller a versatile choice when conditions are soft or loose, but don’t quite warrant a mud spike.
Understanding Maxxis’ Technologies
Maxxis offer several compounds, and several casings. Different technologies and combinations are available in different tyres. Below we have defined these different compounds and casings so you can find the best tyre for your riding:
Maxxis Tyre Compounds
Single Compound
A durable, single rubber compound is used throughout the tread. This design prioritizes long-lasting performance and consistent traction, making it ideal for riders who value reliability and mileage over ultimate grip.
Dual Compound
Two rubber compounds are used within the tread: a harder, longer-wearing base and centre for durability and low rolling resistance, with softer shoulder knobs for improved cornering grip. The perfect balance of speed, traction, and lifespan.
3C MaxxSpeed
The fastest of Maxxis’ triple compounds, engineered for cross-country and marathon racing. A hard base layer supports two progressively softer top layers to minimize rolling resistance and enhance traction-ideal for efficiency and speed on smoother terrain.
3C MaxxTerra
A versatile, trail-focused triple compound offering more traction than MaxxSpeed but better rolling resistance and durability than MaxxGrip. Suited for aggressive trail and enduro riders who want dependable grip without sacrificing too much speed.
3C MaxxGrip
The softest and grippiest triple compound, providing maximum traction and control on technical terrain. Commonly used in downhill and enduro tyres, it delivers exceptional cornering and braking performance, with the trade-off of faster wear and higher rolling resistance.
Maxxis Tyre Casings Explained
EXO
A lightweight sidewall protection layer made from a densely woven fabric. EXO adds cut and abrasion resistance without significantly increasing weight-perfect for trail, light enduro, and aggressive XC riders who want extra durability with minimal weight penalty.
EXO+
An upgraded version of EXO with an additional layer of protection. EXO+ combines the standard EXO sidewall with a layer of SilkShield or a butyl insert under the tread, improving puncture resistance and damping. Great for aggressive trail and enduro use where tougher protection is needed without going full heavy-duty.
DoubleDown (DD)
A dual-ply 120 TPI casing that offers nearly downhill-level protection but at a lower weight. Designed for enduro and aggressive trail riders who push hard on technical descents but still need to pedal efficiently. A great balance of strength, stability, and performance.
Downhill (DH)
The burliest casing Maxxis makes. Built with two full 60 TPI plies and a butyl insert for maximum puncture resistance, sidewall stiffness, and stability at low pressures. Designed to withstand the rigors of downhill racing and bike park abuse-where strength matters more than weight.
A final extra... Wide Trail (WT)
Maxxis offers some of its tyres in a Wide Trail (WT) construction style, the idea is to maximise performance on modern wider rims by adjusting the tread layout. This prevents the tyre becoming too square on rims. On rims with an inner width of 30-35mm, this leads to a rounder profile bringing increased traction, accuracy and support - especially at lower tyre pressures.
